Bray’s St. Patrick’s Day Festival is now in its seventh year and just keeps growing bigger and better. With nine jam packed days of fun activities and entertainment, our longest festival to date, there is sure to be something for all the family.
This year for the first time ever The St. Patrick’s Festival Committee are calling upon the Bray Community for their help in choosing our Parade’s Grand Marshall. The lucky winner will be collected from their house in a limousine and brought to the Town Hall where they will head up the Parade in a classic Vintage Car, when all the fuss of the parade is over our Grand Marshall and a guest of their choice will be treated to a relaxing dinner in the Tower Bistro to round off the magical day.
A Grand Marshall is defined as “a person honoured as the ceremonial marshal of a parade”. Do you know anyone who you think deserves this title? It may be someone who has done a lot of charity work or has spent most of their time training or working with youth groups or it could be a man or woman who excels in their job or hobby.
If you know someone who you believe should be honoured in this years St. Patrick’s Day Parade please vote for them by logging onto our website: www.stpatricksfestivalbray.ie or alternatively there are voting boxes in selected shops throughout Bray town. Applications forms for the parade are available from The Bray Chamber of Commerce who can be contacted by phone: (01) 2828248 or by email: info@braychamber.ie.
PRESS STATEMENT
The four Chambers of Commerce in Co. Wicklow representing their members in Bray, Greystones, Wicklow and Arklow have joined forces in their opposition to the Headshops in Co. Wicklow.
Mr. Mark Felton, the President of the County Wicklow Chamber, said it was important for the four Wicklow Chambers to stand together and oppose the Headshops. “The four Presidents of the Wicklow Chambers are united in their opposition to these Headshops and we are determined on behalf of our members to put pressure on the Government to bring in legislation to stop the spread of enterprises such as this in our towns”, said Mark. “We appreciate the assistance and the ongoing monitoring of the Headshops by An Garda Sochna but unfortunately until legislation is enacted the garda have little powers to put a stop to the activities these shops carry out.
In Bray a forum has been set up consisting of members of the Bray Chamber and local and national public representatives. Bray Chamber President, Mr. John Nolan, said the forum had met on a number of occasions and its representatives plan to travel into Dil ireann to a meeting with the five TDS representing Co. Wicklow. “It is vital that we get as much support as possible on the issue of the Headshops”, said John Nolan. “We have made contact with the landlord of the Headshop premises in Bray to convey to him the views and concerns of people who are opposed to the Headshop. We have also taken the step to write to all the estate agents and auctioneers in the Bray area to make them aware of our concerns about the arrival of other Headshops in our town.
“The Bray Chamber is currently investigating the planning and bye-laws to see if there are options available to close down the Headshop. However, we believe that urgent action must be taken by the Government and in particular by the Minister for Health, the Minister for the Environment and the Minister for Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs to introduce regulations to make the possession and sale of the substances sold in the Headshops illegal and subject to criminal sanctions.
“The Bray Chamber, along with the other Chambers in Greystones, Wicklow and Arklow, will continue to lead the opposition against Headshops until we are satisfied that our children and young people are protected from substances being sold as ‘legal highs’ in the Headshops”, concluded John Nolan.

“CAN WE SEE YOUR MUSCLES KATIE?……”
The Bray Chamber of Commerce organised for World Champ Katie Taylor to visit her many fans in St Kieran’s School on Old Connaught Avenue this
morning (Friday).
Fresh from a weigh-in for her next fight on the 5th March against European Silver Medalist Alezandra Siderenko, Katie was greeted by some of her
number one fans. The top boxer in St. Kieran’s School presented Katie with some flowers and each of the students made collages and pictures. Katie then faced a tough Questions and Answers session, responding to questions that ranged to queries on her next few fights, her path to the Olympics, her soccer skills, what she gave up for Lent (the questioner having given up fizzy drinks!) whether she would show them her muscles…. And if she had ever beaten Bernard Dunne in a fight.
Katie signed autographs and spent time with each student. Katie told the students to follow their dreams and if they work hard at something anything
is possible. Principle of St Kierans NS Caroline Kennedy said “Katie is an inspirational figure for the students here and they admire and look up to
her. They were thrilled and we are very grateful that she was able to visit St Keiran’s” Bray Chamber Executive, Noreen Kelly, commented afterwards “Bray Chamber would like to thank Katie Taylor for giving up her time to visit St Kieran’s. She is a wonderful ambassador for Bray and just seeing the excited faces of the students today, this experience will stay with
them forever”.
Katie, who is sponsored by Adidas and Toyota, has a busy few weeks ahead and is training hard. On the 5th March she fights the Ukrainian European
Silver Medalist, in her first fight since the Europeans in August. She then travels to Chez Republic in March, Turkey in April for the Felix Stan Tournament in April and India for training later in the summer. She will be defending her 3rd European title in August and her third World Championship in September in Barbados.

The President of the Bray Chamber of Commerce, John Nolan, has voiced the concerns of the Chamber at the news that Wicklow County Council granted permission for a film-making facility in Ashford.
“The Executive members of the Chamber of Commerce were very disturbed to learn the news that planning permission had been granted for a film-making
facility in Ashford to a company currently based in Ardmore Studios”, said John Nolan.
“At a recent Executive meeting, members recalled making a presentation to the Members and Manager of Wicklow County Council some years ago when it
was proposed to rezone land in Ashford for similar facilities. The Bray Chamber was against this rezoning as were all the Councillors presenting
the Bray Electoral area and at the end of the day the rezoning didn’t get the go ahead.
“There are very real fears that this new facility located in Ashford will have an adverse affect on the town of Bray. It would be nave to think
that two film-making studios could survive in North Wicklow and the Chamber has real concerns about the loss of jobs for people working in Ardmore
Studios. Ardmore Studios has provided employment over the years to local trades people and also to thousands from Bray who worked as ‘extras’ on
set.”
Mr. Nolan also said that the Chamber Executive was concerned to hear that the local Councillors were not informed about the planning application and
they felt that there was a certain lack of transparency and democracy with the planning process. “We are writing to the County Manager in Wicklow County Council to express our views and concerns about this issue”, he concluded.

Over 7 months ago, Bray Retailers joined forces with Bray Chamber and Bray town council to run a very successful SHOP LOCAL campaign in Bray. The first phase of the project was the design and distribution of a Shop Local Poster. The committee then launched their voucher booklet entitled "Brays Book of Business Bargains". The booklet contained 100 special offers, discounts and advertisements from retailers & businesses in Bray. The reasoning was to showcase what Bray has to offer & en courage people to shop in the town.
Due to popular demand the committee have now launched the Christmas booklet! The booklet is currently being distributed to 13,000 homes in the town and surrounding areas such as Shankill, Rathmichael etc., Look out for your copy through your door. For those who do not receive their copy, please email Bray Chamber at info@braychamber.ie or call 01-2828248.
This year, we hope to have the best ever Christmas Festival Campaign with your help. One of ways we want to add lots of fun, colour and life to Bray at Christmas time for the children is to ask all the local primary schools to participate in our Children’s Christmas Lantern Parade.
We would like children to build their own Christmas Lantern. This can be done at home or during their Art Class in school. The Bray Chamber will provide a Lantern Stick and a LED Lantern Light (as long as stocks last) but your child can use their own imagination to build any Lantern they like fun is the key here.
We would encourage the children to try and make their Lantern’s from re-cycled material if at all possible.
We are asking parents and children to walk with their own specially made Lanterns in our Parade, on Saturday 21st November. The parade, which is being led by Santa and his special Elves, will start from St Cronan’s School for those that want to participate in the parade, please meet at St. Cronan’s School at 4.30pm and will move down the Vevay Road and onto the Civic Plaza where this years Christmas Lighting Display will be switched on by our special guests - World Champ, Katie Taylor, East Coasts Declan Meehan, Bray Chamber President John Nolan and Cathaoirleach of BTC John Ryan.
“We really feel this will be a truly magical event for all the family, we need your help and look forward to seeing you there” commented Mick Glynn, Event Organiser

The Bray Chamber of Commerce is delighted to announce that the Official Switch-On of the Christmas Lights which traditionally heralds the beginning of the Christmas Season in Bray will take place on Saturday November 21st.
Even though it seemed that there might have been no Christmas Lights this year because of lack of funding, the Bray Chamber’s appeal to local businesses for contributions towards the Christmas event proved somewhat successful. Chamber PRO, Anne Ferris said she wished to thank all those businesses who have already paid a contribution towards the Christmas Lights and asked those remaining businesses to make their contribution as quickly as possible.
“The Chamber sends out a heartfelt thanks to the local business people who have paid their contribution to the Christmas Lights”, said Anne Ferris. “And in particular we would like to thank the Bray Town Council for the annual allocation towards the costs. We are currently designing a poster that retailers and businesses will be able to put up in their premises showing they have contributed to the Christmas Lights this year and we will be asking shoppers in the run up to Christmas to support these businesses.
“Last year we organized the Parade of Light which saw local school children carry their Christmas Lanterns down from St. Cronan’s School to the Civic Plaza and we had a competition for the best Lanterns. This year we are asking the schools to participate again and details can be obtained from the Chamber Office. In addition, we will also have Bray’s first ever Ice Skating Rink which will certainly add to the Christmas Festivities and will bring a lot of people into the town.
“The switch on of the magnificent Christmas Lights display, which will create a winter wonderland in Bray Town Centre over the Christmas period, will take place at the Plaza in the Civic Centre on the Main Street on Saturday 21st November from 4pm-6pm. We are delighted to announce that guest of honour this year is our very own World Champion Katie Taylor. MC for the event will be Declan Meehan, presenter of the Morning Show on East Coast Radio”, concluded Anne.
The Christmas Lights Campaign is provided by Bray & District Chamber in association with Bray Town Council and in conjunction with participating Bray businesses and retailers. For more information on the Christmas Lights Ceremony or the Lantern Competition, please Kathy or Stephanie in the Chamber office at 01-2828248.

The Bray Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the very positive response to the news that Bray will have its first ever Ice Skating Rink this Christmas.
“The Chamber of Commerce and the Local Retailers have been working very hard in recent months to encourage people to shop local”, said John Nolan,
Chamber President. “We are delighted that there is such a positive energy in the town and coming up to Christmas we are really looking forward to the Ice Skating Rink and of course the Annual Christmas Lights Extravaganza.
“The retailers and businesses have really come together this year to ensure that we will have plenty of attractions on the Main Street and the other main shopping areas and this will encourage people to do their Christmas shopping in Bray. In addition, it will encourage visitors from both South
Dublin and North Wicklow to come to Bray to enjoy our facilities and to shop in the town.
“The thorny issue of the annual Christmas Lights has to be highlighted by the Chamber as we cannot afford to provide the lights and suffer such a
shortfall in money year after year. This year, we have made a special plea to local businesses to support the Chamber - and the town of Bray - by
contributing towards the costs of the lights and I am confident that we will get a positive response over the next couple of weeks.
“The Chamber of Commerce would like to state that its members are very committed to providing the Christmas Lights and it will do everything
possible to ensure that Bray enjoys what has become one of the biggest and brightest Christmas Lights displays in the country. We would encourage
everyone living in the town to “Stay in Bray and Shop Local”, concluded John Nolan.

Bright Ideas: A Smarter Business Guide to Energy Efficiency Launched
The President of the Bray & District Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the initiative by Chambers Ireland and the ESB Customer Supply to reduce energy usage in the workplace.
“Chambers Ireland and ESB Customer Supply recently launched Bright Ideas: A Smarter Business Guide to Energy Efficiency to help small and medium sized companies to improve performance and to become more environmentally aware through energy efficiency”, said John Nolan, President of Bray Chamber.
“Everyone in business knows just how costly energy is and the guide launched this week by our parent organisation, Chambers Ireland, together with the ESB will help companies and their staff to improve energy efficiency thereby reducing costs and enhancing their competitiveness.
“The guide shows how even the smallest of changes can deliver substantial cost savings while also reducing emissions and will be a big help to companies struggling to manage costs in these challenging times.”
The Guide offers practical advice on the actions to take with a view to improving energy efficiency, and cutting costs for business including:
1. Appointing an Energy Champion;
2. Understanding your Bill;
3. Monitoring Usage;
4. Reviewing operations;
5. Implementing Improvements; and
6. Monitoring Progress.

STATEMENT ISSUED BY
JOHN NOLAN, PRESIDENT OF BRAY CHAMBER,
MARTINA ROBINSON, PRESIDENT OF WICKLOW CHAMBER, DONAL O'SULLIVAN,
PRESIDENT OF ARKLOW CHAMBER
MARK FELTON, PRESIDENT OF GREYSTONES CHAMBER.
10th September 2009
County Wicklow Chambers of Commerce announced that it will be urging its members to vote Yes in the Lisbon Treaty Referendum on October 2nd. Following a recent meeting of the Presidents of the four Wicklow Chambers, the Presidents of the County Wicklow Chambers, Mr. John Nolan, said it was crucial that the Lisbon Treaty is passed and that Ireland sustains its position at the heart of Europe.
“The four Wicklow Chambers support the vision of a strong voice in Europe and the need for us to become more integrated to improve our ability to compete on the world stage”, said Mr. John Nolan. “The Government successfully negotiated a commitment that we would retain control of our taxation rates. Taken in conjunction with the changes that have been agreed since June 2008 the commitment that every country will retain the right to nominate a Commissioner and the legal guarantees and declarations on issues that emerged as matters of concern in the last referendum there is now an even stronger case than there was for a yes vote last year.
“We believe that Ireland’s continued participation at the core of the European Union is crucial to rebuilding our economy and will put us in a positive position in tackling the economic slowdown and the ongoing banking crisis. It will help restore international confidence in Ireland so that jobs and businesses can be secured here.
“The Lisbon Treaty will equip us with more efficient structures that will allow Ireland and Europe to compete effectively. Most importantly from our point of view the Lisbon Treaty commits the EU to promote a social market economy aiming at full employment and social progress.
“The County Wicklow Chambers will be calling on its members in Co. Wicklow to vote Yes to Lisbon. Now more than ever we need to confirm our commitment to Europe. International investors into Ireland value the fact that we are an English speaking country at the heart of Europe. This is our unique selling point and we must continue to capitalise on it”, concluded Mr. Nolan.

Bray Chamber Executives, Eugene Finnegan, Mick Glynn & Vice President Ian Donnelly with Leo the Lion and the Heineken Cup in Bray recently
The Shop Local Campaign Committee in conjunction with Bray Chamber of Commerce brought the HEINEKEN CUP to Bray recently (Wed 26th August). Leinster’s Mascot Leo the Lion met with Bray Shoppers who came along in droves to take advantage of the unique opportunity to get their picture taken with the Heineken Cup and Leo the Lion. Leo, with Heineken Cup in tow, created a great stir in Bray as he given a police escort up Bray Main Street in a convertible car with Leinster Flags waving, where he was met by shoppers and some local press.
Bringing the Heineken cup to Bray was another initiative in the Shop Local Campaign, where Bray Retailers have joined forces to entice people to come into Bray to shop. With the recent launch of their Voucher booklet which they are calling “Bray’s Book of Business Bargains” containing special offers and promotions from retailers and businesses around Bray. The Retailers hope that this will help promote what they believe are the key reasons why residents of the town should shop locally - protecting local jobs, creating new jobs, strengthening the local economy, and protecting their town.
“BRAY IS BUZZING” BRAY CHAMBER PRESS RELEASE
07/08/09
“Isn’t it wonderful? The good news story of Bray residents and retailers coming together in a joint effort for the town, is an inspiration for other towns in the country” were the sentiments of the Bray Chamber’s Shop Local campaign committee. “Bray’s Shop Local campaign is gaining so much momentum and publicity that it obtained National coverage on Bank Holiday Monday, showing the town at its best”, said Anne-Marie Holland.
Town residents were thrilled to see their town on the RTE TV evening news both at 6.00pm and 9.00pm news together with the RTE Radio 1 lunchtime news broadcast. To view the piece from the evening news go to http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/0803/6news.html. “Bray is definitely buzzing right now and I believe that all this coverage has definitely raised awareness about the importance of each resident to shop locally and in turn keep some of their neighbours in their jobs”, said the Chamber President, John Nolan.
“Local employment is a significant part or commercial activity in the town. Whether it is part-time or full-time employment, lots of our neighbours are working in our shops and services and we as a community must work together to keep them there. I know the atmosphere in the town is one of energy and vitality but the future of our town can only be safeguarded if we change our habits and spend locally” he concluded.
To add to that, Bray Chamber of Commerce and Bray Retailers in conjunction with their shop local campaign have urged shoppers to carefully notice the increased facilities and make use of them when shopping in our town. “Believe it or not, Bray has now so many car parking spaces that no car park is ever completely full”, said Chamber President John Nolan.
“Bray Town Council has played its part by recently erecting new blue directional parking signs around the town to help the flow of traffic into parking spaces. With the recent re-opening of the Florence Road car park and the huge car park on the Herbert Road, Bray can no longer use the lack of parking as an excuse for not shopping locally.
